Ben arrivati.
State tranquilli che tutto avrà fine.
Baci affettuosi e saluti a tutti
Tuo affettuoso fratello (si chiamava Angelo).”
Caporale del 35° reggimento fanteria, Brigata Pistoia, 3° compagnia.
Oggi:
A presto.

Welcome. make yourself comfortable because this time it will take patience
A postcard from the past.
August 19, 1916 – war zone.
“My dear sister (her name was Annetta),
While the other night I received your letter of the 15th to which I replied yesterday with a letter, last night,
I received your postcard from the 14th.
In yesterday’s letter I asked you everything that suited me.
As always, I am fine, as I also feel about you, it is the only consolation I can have.
Rest assured that everything will end.
Affectionate kisses and greetings to all
Your affectionate brother (his name was Angelo). “
Corporal of the 35th Infantry Regiment, Pistoia Brigade, 3rd Company.
Today:
August 19, 2021 – peace zone – 105 years later.
Today, I am writing to you about a letter, now yellowed by time, which I carefully keep in a glass cabinet. I bought it, among the infinity of antiques, a few years ago. Where is it? Think of a classic village in the Italian countryside. The historic fountain in the center of the square, the arcades with arches and columns of stone polished by time and the small church with its devoted bell tower on one side. Here, that’s where I found it.
It was written with nib and inkwell exactly 105 years ago, by a corporal of the Royal Italian Army. One of the millions of children torn from their homes with no ifs and buts and called to face the fear of who knows what battles. What sad awareness and how few certainties they will have had. One of all, that of going back to see and hug your loved ones again.
When I visit these village markets, steeped in history, I get a kind of fervor that, honestly, I find it hard to explain. Here, you can find valuable items such as exquisitely inlaid seventeenth-century chests, the memory of some gold-handed craftsman. A fencing guise of who knows what era, or common items: a tin toy car with a spring movement, a forbidden dream of the children of the past. Old telephones, eyeglass barrels, discolored posters and now forgotten football player stickers. Saddles with worn leather. Blunt scissors and many, many, many memories.
Lying in an old shoe box, hidden by a very thin transparent film, this military postcard was waiting for me. For a few euros, I decided to buy it and so it became mine, if only materially.
As a child, I often dreamed with open eyes. I’ve always enjoyed doing it. You can well imagine fifty years of television and reading, what support and thrust they may have given to the colors, tones and boundaries of my unbridled and so dear imagination.
Anyone who knows me well knows. When the environment and the moment allow me, I can give strength to my fervent imagination. I manage to isolate myself and slowly slide into a new world. A particular brain process is activated and the magic begins.
As I read and the faint ink of the convoluted characters reflected on my irises, the words, like the breath of winter, began to take shape in my thoughts. I was with my brother and sister, one wrote, the other read. Suddenly, everything seemed defined to me: on one side the deep and filthy trench, the candle next to the inkwell on a wooden box for ammunition, the haunted shadows projected on the mud-encrusted walls and a boy in uniform, the pen in his hands, bending over his letter.
A large kitchen, a fireplace and a girl with a chore apron tied on the hips, the same letter in her hand on the opposite side.
In the background, two elderly people sitting on a plank, in a corner, a woman with a tired expression holding a sleeping baby in her arms. I feel a weight in my chest. I imagine the palpitating voice of the sister engaged in reading the little information that has just arrived, the hands of the grandparents shaking, the heavy breathing of the mother who thinks of her son, her eldest, now so far away. She thinks of the woolen socks that she will have to send before winter arrives so that her son does not fear the cold, there are not only bullets that can hurt in war … mother’s heart.
Mother also worried about her father, who also left and guarded the mountains to the north. Who knows, maybe father and son are close and will be able to see each other, if luck will … heart of a wife.
The bells of the devoted bell tower ring and everything vanishes, I wake up, but I don’t forget.
Thanks to the web, the planetary encyclopedia of our day, I was able to find some information on this corporal.
The 35th infantry regiment, in the days in which the letter was written, was part of the Pistoia Brigade and was deployed to block the Venetian plain. He worked intensely on Mount Cengio and then on Cimone and again on the front line on the slopes of Tonezza.
On those places, today extraordinary tourist destinations, I have been there several times. The path that crosses Mount Cengio, the one that leads to the famous Salto del Granatiere, runs along the entire ridge and the view down the valley is a glance!
Twice, the corporal’s paths and mine have crossed and neither of us would have ever imagined it. I like to think that this post, yes, today is the third.
The Pistoia Brigade, in July 1916, suffered many losses. In that year, the enemy, blinded by the fumes of a politics deaf to human piety and by the usual partisan propaganda that always precedes all wars, advanced quickly and suddenly, looked out on the rocky bastions, the last embankments before flooding down. for the Venetian valley. A few kilometers of plateau and would have arrived walking in Venice.
But the opponent at the time found waiting for him, on the ridges, in the tunnels and on the crevasses, a human dam erected and consolidated by soldiers ready to defend their lands. There are various issues that can affect the outcome of a battle, but when you have to defend your home and you have everything to lose, the forces on the field become relative. On these mountains, soaked in the innocent blood of all nations, many officers lost their lives to lead their soldiers in the assault and many soldiers died following their officers in the rush.
As far as I could, I did some research and from the documentation released by the competent bodies, it is certain that our good corporal managed to escape and go home. I looked in the roll of honor of our fallen and missing in the war, but there is no trace of Angelo. Of course he must have seen so many. For obvious reasons of confidentiality I can only write that our soldier was Tuscan. Her sister lived in a small and quiet village in southern Tuscany with soft green hills in the summer and colored in sparkling ocher during the picturesque autumn. Tuscany. Land of legendary medieval villages and even more ancient suggestions. Here the ancient Etruscans lived. Land that smells of genuine flavors. Homemade pasta, honey and more game and still images of endless rows of cypresses, evergreen trees that symbolize immortality.
It is here that with his heavy burden, Angelo, one day, returned to embrace his sister and his loved ones, to enjoy the scents of his land, to review the colors of his hills and who knows, if observing those homelands heights, the thought he has not flown through the wounded lands of the Veneto now safe. To Mount Cengio, to Cimone, to the lost companions. Who knows …
This story, of course, is one of my many fantasies. My thoughts came out like soap bubbles looking at and reading this letter which, who knows how, from a war zone deep in the Veneto region, traveled through half of Italy and then returned, after a century, again to Veneto. How she went, I’ll never really know. Angelo went home and this gives me so much pleasure. Unknowingly between us, a friendship was born. A clipping of his story is kept in my display cabinet, next to another letter sent in 1942 by an alpine who was distantly loved by him. But this is really another story.
Allow me to give you some advice. If you ever find yourself in the parts of the Astico Valley, go to Mount Cengio, walking through its paths would be really worth it. The reasons? Well, if you go there you will understand them for yourself.
Soon.
